The X4's handling is surprisingly sharp for a car of its stature, so you won't be satisfying car-like handling for the elevated driving position.

The three-litre, six-cylinder diesel of the X4 xDrive30d xDrive will never leave you feeling short-changed on power, and is impressively flexible too.

Equipment levels are generous, which is a good thing considering the price BMW charges for the X4. Still, this means that the saving on offer won't be eaten up by creature comforts which should be included as standard.

Though more stylish, the X4 is less practical and more expensive than its X3 sibling. Equally, it doesn’t come in a two-wheel drive version, so buyers looking for a stylish way to save fuel may be better off with a Volvo XC60 D4.

It certainly handles well but weighing around 1800kg, you’re aware of the car's heft when accelerating and cornering. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe does a much better job of sporting family transportation.

We also picked up some road and wind noise from the door mirrors and the base of the windscreen when we tested the X4, which could make long journeys tiresome.

Should I add any options?

The X4 doesn't come cheap, at £40,242 even with our considerable discount, so we'd keep it standard and enjoy the saving on offer.

What are its rivals?

As yet, it has none, until the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé goes on sale.
