British specialty car maker TVR has released the first teasers for its new coupe, expected to make its official debut in 2017.
These new teasers, in the form of a shadowy side-profile image and an artwork, suggest the British marque is moving closer to revealing its first offering in 10 years, after production on the unique sports cars seized in 2006.
The new coupe, which reports suggest may wear the Griffith badge that adorned models in the 1990s and very early 2000s, has been the subject of rumours and reports since the brand’s revival in 2013.
As an indication of the scale of TVR’s return, it’s alleged that almost 400 deposits have been taken for the yet-to-be-seen sports car.
Those attending the London motor show this week were teased even further, with the company displaying a full-size clay model of the car covered up. Joining the disguised model was a 1960s TVR Griffith 400, perhaps alluding further to the name that will adorn the upcoming coupe.
The report, published by UK magazine Autocar, claims TVR is planning to add a convertible to the range, with owner Les Edgar claiming the model has been built with an open-top version in mind.
The car’s development has been overseen by Cosworth, as well as Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1. The collaboration was publicly announced in June 2015.
It’s known that the car will be built using Gordon Murray’s iStream carbon-fibre manufacturing process, which sees carbon-fibre panels bonded to a tubular steel frame, adding strength and shedding weight.
Under the bonnet, it’s claimed power will come from a Ford-based Cosworth V8 engine producing more than 298kW of power, capable of propelling the rear-wheel-drive coupe to 100km/h in less than four seconds.
The coupe is said to be priced at 65,000 pounds ($127,337 AUD), though the report claims the launch car will be a special-edition model attracting a price tag of “sub-100,000 pounds” ($195,903 AUD).
Construction of the vehicle is expected to take place at the company’s new Circuit of Wales facility, said to open later this year.
Fans can expect the car to arrive some time in 2017, so stay tuned to CarAdvice for more news on the long-awaited sports car.
